Director of Finance (Charlottesville)

Overview Spire LLC is the operating entity behind StoreYour.com, a growing consumer storage products business with a focus on garage organization and storage for outdoor enthusiasts as well as everyday consumers. We manufacture in Vietnam and sell across the United States (our largest market), Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe through a mix of direct-to-consumer, Amazon, and other e-commerce channels, with a growing wholesale business and drop-ship relationships with numerous third-party retailers. We are creating this role to bring finance in-house under one capable, hands-on leader. As a private-equity-owned company, we operate with a high reporting burden — monthly income statements, a rolling cash flow forecast, and covenant-level scrutiny. This is a player-coach role: you will do the hands-on work while building the systems, controls, and eventually the small team that let finance scale with the business. You will absorb the responsibilities currently spread across our fractional accounting firm, leverage systems and AI to bolster our outputs and understanding, and create stronger, more regular visibility and management of daily financials down to channel and product profitability. Numerous enhancements are already underway with how we analyze, manage, and report on our business. You will takeover what's already been achieved and continue to improve upon it. Roles & Responsibilities Financial Reporting & the Monthly Close • Own the full monthly close and deliver timely, accurate financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, and cash flow). • Take direct ownership of the general ledger, chart of accounts / GL-code structure, and day-to-day QuickBooks Online management. • Establish and enforce accounting policies and internal controls appropriate to a PE-backed business. • Produce the monthly income statement package for the PE sponsor and lender group on a reliable, predictable cadence. • Own the annual audit — serve as the primary liaison to external auditors, prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation, coordinate the business through fieldwork, and manage the engagement to a clean, on-time completion each year. Cash Management & Forecasting • Review, revise as necessary, and maintain the rolling 52-week cash flow forecast — updated weekly — and manage the business through a cash-tight period with rigorous discipline. • Own treasury and working-capital management: AP timing, AR collections, inventory purchasing cadence, and vendor terms. • Give leadership early, honest visibility into cash risks and the levers available to manage them. Lender & PE Sponsor Relations • Serve as the primary finance point of contact for our private equity sponsor and lenders. • Manage the reporting calendar, covenant compliance and calculations, and all recurring and ad-hoc lender requests. • Tell the story through the financials — translate results into a clear narrative that explains performance, risks, and outlook, rather than simply reporting numbers. Banking, Capital & the LOC • Lead the operational side of our bank transition, including account setup, migration of payments and controls, and relationship management. • Support the pursuit and closing of a new line of credit — preparing the financial package, borrowing-base reporting, and ongoing compliance. Accounts Payable, AR & Transactional Finance • Bring accounts payable fully in-house: vendor management, approvals, payment runs, and expense controls. Today we use Ramp for management but also a fractional AP resource external to the business. • Own accounts receivable and collections, which will grow in importance as the wholesale business scales. • Manage corporate cards, expense reimbursement, and related controls. Margin, Cost & Business Partnership • Understand and challenge the business — partner with the CEO and Head of Operations on decisions rather than just recording them. • Analyze profitability by channel (DTC, Amazon, other e-commerce, and wholesale) and by product, and surface where the business makes and loses money. • Partner with Supply Chain Manager on landed-cost and inventory accounting — including manufacturing in Vietnam, freight, duties/tariffs, and the economics of drop-shipping to third-party retailers. • Support pricing, promotional, and channel-mix decisions with clear unit economics. Tax & International Compliance • Manage the relationship with our tax partner (Numeral) — ensuring filings are accurate and timely, and that we are getting full value from the relationship. Oversee transition from filing partner to in-house. • Oversee partner managing indirect tax and cross-border compliance across the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Europe (e.g., U.S. sales tax nexus, VAT/GST), coordinating specialists as needed. • Manage multi-currency accounting and FX exposure across international selling regions. Operations, Payroll & People-Related Administration Because this is a broad, hands-on role, it is expected to absorb a set of operational and administrative finance responsibilities that today have no clear home: • Run payroll and ensure accurate, compliant processing. • Administer the 401(k) plan, including contributions, compliance, and the annual audit/filing process. • Manage employee benefits administration and related renewals in coordination with brokers/providers. • Own business insurance renewals and act as the finance lead on other operational vendor relationships. Ideal Candidates will have the following: Required • 8 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, including ownership of a full monthly close and financial statements. • Proven controller-level or finance-leadership experience in a small or lower-middle-market company — someone comfortable being hands-on in the ledger and strategic in the boardroom. • Experience across DTC, Amazon/marketplace, and wholesale channels, including drop-ship / 3P relationships. • Direct experience reporting to lenders and/or a private equity sponsor — covenant compliance, cash reporting, and a demanding reporting cadence. • Experience owning an annual financial audit — managing external auditors and the engagement to a clean, on-time completion. • Strong cash forecasting and treasury skills — you have run a business through a cash-constrained period and managed a rolling cash flow forecast. • Deep, hands-on QuickBooks Online expertise and command of GL structure and internal controls. • Experience leveraging AI to compliment the organization and systems, to enhance visibility, analysis, and inform strategy discussions. • Consumer products, e-commerce, and/or inventory-based business experience, with a solid grasp of landed cost, COGS, and inventory accounting. • Clear communicator who can turn financials into a narrative for non-financial leaders, lenders, and investors. • High integrity, strong ownership mentality, and comfort operating with limited support in a fast-moving environment. Preferred • International/multi-currency experience (Canada, U.K., Europe) and familiarity with VAT/GST and U.S. sales tax nexus. • Experience importing from overseas manufacturing (e.g., Vietnam/Asia) — duties, tariffs, and freight. • Experience standing up an in-house finance function or transitioning off outsourced/fractional support. • Comfort leveraging modern finance systems and AI tools to improve reporting, analysis, and efficiency. • Payroll, 401(k), and benefits administration exposure. • CPA and/or MBA a plus, but demonstrated capability matters more than credentials.
