This contract opportunity in Winston-Salem, NC offers a chance to provide critical care nursing in a dynamic and expanding unit at a well-established medical center with Level 1 Trauma Designation and academic teaching status. Position Overview:You will join a new progressive care unit (PCU) expected to open in early February 2026, initially serving high acuity cardiac patients with plans to transition to a full ICU by the end of 2026. The unit will house 10-12 beds and manage complex cardiac cases including post-cardiac surgeries, heart transplants, and vascular procedures. Responsibilities: Deliver comprehensive nursing care to patients with cardiac diagnoses such as CHF, STEMI/NSTEMI, arrhythmias, and post-surgical interventions. Manage advanced cardiac monitoring and interventions, including defibrillation, EKG interpretation, chest tubes, tracheostomies, and vasoactive drips. Support transitions of care as the unit evolves from PCU to ICU, eventually caring for ventilated and post-open heart patients. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including hospitalists, intensivists, residents, respiratory therapists, and telehealth technicians. Participate in unit float rotations within scope across designated hospital units. Qualifications: Minimum 2 years ICU or PCU experience, with preference for cardiovascular ICU background. Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications. Proficient in ICU nursing skills and cardiovascular patient management. Experience with Swan-Ganz catheters, Impella devices, wound care, and cardiac procedures is highly desirable. Familiarity with LVAD and post-cardiac transplant care is a plus; additional training provided. Ability to perform critical care interventions including managing chest tubes, arterial lines, and multiple drips. Schedule: 12-hour shifts, 6:30 AM 7:00 PM or 6:30 PM 7:00 AM. Weekend rotation every other or equivalent. Holiday coverage approximately 50%. Self-scheduling with priority given to permanent staff.
