WASTEWATER OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE WORKER (FT)
Upper Merion Township, located in King of Prussia, PA, is looking for a highly motivated Wastewater Operations & Maintenance Worker who will report directly to the WPCC Lead Operator. This position involves semi-skilled maintenance work of the Water Pollution Control Centers and the Collections System. This employee is responsible for general plant operations, housekeeping, de-watering, and disposal of sewage solids generated at the Township’s wastewater treatment plants. This employee participates in the inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repair of pumping stations, sewer lines, and associated equipment. Work is performed in a dynamic industrial setting that may involve sustained physical effort and prolonged exposure to strong and persistent odors. The Wastewater Operations & Maintenance Worker job responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Operates and maintains various mechanical equipment throughout the treatment plants. Inspects the operation of plant equipment and characteristics of the wastewater. Troubleshoots problems to determine the cause of wastewater conditions. Draws sludge from clarifiers and pumps to various locations within the plant. Collects samples of wastewater and monitors flow data from various areas within the wastewater treatment plant facility. Regulates rates for sludge flow, chemical feed, and air application by opening and closing valves and gates. Informs supervisor of potential equipment problems. Performs preventive maintenance and emergency repairs on plant equipment. Repairs and/or replaces valves, pumps, and motors; operates portable pumps. Operates trucks with plows during snow removal. Reads and interprets equipment manuals and maintenance charts. Understands and follows written and verbal instructions. Calculates flow rates with mathematical formulas. Withstands exposure to weather and to unprotected heights frequently, foul odors, chemical fumes, high noise levels, and slippery and uneven surfaces occasionally. Works in confined spaces and with moving machinery. Inspects and monitors pumps, motors, valves, controllers, ventilators, alarms, and equipment contained within the wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and meter pits throughout the Township daily. Maintains and cleans meter pits, wet wells, and dry wells within pumping stations, buildings, and property. Clears and cleans sanitary sewer lines and storm sewers or removes sewage from wastewater system with a high-pressure pumping truck; connects high-pressure hoses to pipe valves and operates manual controls on truck to regulate water flow and pressure, or connects vacuum hoses to pipeline system and pumps; removes hoses when lines are cleared. Operates hand and power tools to break up and remove asphalt or cement surface, remove surrounding fill to expose pipe, and replace fill. Drives and operates Township vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment. Sets up signs, barricades, and cones to secure the work-site. Clears and maintains Sanitary Sewer Easements. Performs routine maintenance on Jet Trucks and TV Equipment. Interacts with Residents and Contractors. Inspects pumping stations, sewer lines, and equipment. Maintains and clears grass and vegetation within pumping station boundaries and sewer easements Operates and cleans the following equipment: TV truck, sewer jet, portable generators, portable pumps, blowers, masonry saw, front-end loader, jackhammer, and pickup trucks. Responds to emergency malfunctions, blockages, or alarms on a 24-hour basis. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Characteristics: Perform fine manipulation frequently; stand, walk, climb, balance, bend, and reach at all levels. Work with various tools occasionally including, Township vehicle; hand tools (shovel, sledgehammer, pry bar); air tools; sewer pipe; computer; monitoring equipment; powered air purifying respirators and snow plowing equipment. Stand, walk, handle tools, and vehicle controls, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. frequently. Drive for prolonged periods under stressful conditions. Stand, climb, and balance on ladders, bend, crouch, kneel, crawl, reach at all levels, lift, carry, push, and pull up to 80 lbs., and perform fine manipulation occasionally. Work with various tools occasionally including, Township vehicle; hand tools (shovel, sledgehammer, pry bar); air tools; sewer pipe; computer; monitoring equipment; self-contained breathing apparatus; and snow plowing equipment. Withstand exposure to weather, unprotected heights, slippery and uneven surfaces, wet conditions, traffic hazards, dusty conditions, foul odors, methane gas, chemical degreaser, and noxious odors frequently. Possess visual acuity (near, mid, and far vision, field of vision, depth perception, and color vision). Work in confined spaces and with moving machinery. Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required: High School Education or equivalent. Some experience in equipment maintenance, masonry, and carpentry. A valid PA Driver’s License. Any equivalent combination of training and experience. Additional Requirements: Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Communicate effectively. Work well with others. Knowledge of the operations of wastewater treatment and collection systems. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the operation of treatment plants collection systems Skill in repairing and maintaining equipment. Skill in masonry and plumbing tasks. Ability to understand and carry out instructions given by a supervisor. Ability to make decisions. Ability to communicate and deal with the public.
