Position description SFVAMC/UCSF Emergency Department Staff Physician The San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) is in search of applicants for Emergency Department Staff Physician positions (either Emergency Medicine or Internal Medicine trained). The SFVAHCS is a major teaching site for the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), and all department of medicine physicians enjoy a joint appointment at UCSF. The SFVAHCS serves approximately 90,000 Veterans through the SFVA Medical Center (SFVAMC) and nine community-based outpatient clinics. The SFVAMC is a tertiary academic medical center with around 5,000 admissions per year, offering a full complement of specialty care services including interventional cardiology and gastroenterology, advanced oncology care, and advanced surgical care including orthopedics and neurosurgery. The Emergency Medicine (EM) section exists within the SFVAHCS Medical Service (Department of Medicine) and maintains an academic affiliation with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). The SFVAHCS EM section comprises of approximately 12 staff physicians and 2 advanced practice providers who deliver urgent and emergent clinical care for SFVAHCS. Job Description Join our Team at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, San Francisco, CA as a Physician - Surgical Hospitalist. The primary responsibility of the Surgical Hospitalist is in-house medical coverage of General, Vascular, and Cardiothoracic patients. The Surgical Hospitalist will function in a primary role managing inpatients for these sections. The incumbent would be expected to manage medical care not requiring specialty skills unique to surgeons. In support of the surgical hospitalist, surgical attendings for these specialties will be available for immediate consultation by telephone or in the hospital as necessary. The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 1. Medical management of surgical inpatients; including patients on the ward, transitional care units, and intensive care units a. Notify the on-call surgical attending of any major change in a patient's medical status or when alterations to treatment are needed. b. Consult and coordinate with appropriate services as required for patient care management including but not limited to neurology, renal, cardiology, pulmonary, gastroenterology, hematology, anesthesia, ICU etc. 2. Evaluations a. Initial evaluation of General, Vascular, and Cardiothoracic surgical consults in the hospital or emergency department. b. After initial evaluation. 3. Support of surgical patient care a.Perform simple procedures such as wound vac changes, central line placement, arterial line placement, drain removal, chest tube removal, and other procedures as granted through competency assessment. b. Prepare patient for emergency operations including consent, booking of case, coordination and notification of services. 4. Preferred Qualifications • Specialty training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Med-Peds, or Geriatrics. • Experience working with senior populations or in value-based care settings. • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and digital documentation. • Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. • Ability to work independently and adapt to evolving clinical environments. • Experience supervising Advanced Practice Providers (NPs/PAs).
