Role Overview The Finisher / Cement Mason is responsible for placing, finishing, and repairing concrete for a variety of construction projects, including foundations, slabs, walls, sidewalks, curbs, and structural elements. This role requires skill in working with freshly placed concrete, using hand and power tools to create smooth, durable, and visually consistent surfaces in accordance with project specifications and safety requirements. Primary Responsibilities Spread, level, and finish freshly placed concrete using rakes, shovels, straightedges, screeds, and trowels. Use hand tools and power finishing tools (such as walk-behind or ride-on trowels) to achieve desired surface texture, smoothness, and durability. Apply curing compounds, sealants, surface hardeners, or retarders as required by project specifications. Create edges, joints, and patterns using jointers, edgers, groovers, and stamps. Perform exposed aggregate, broom, polished, or other specialty finishes as needed. Prepare surfaces for concrete placement by cleaning, leveling, or setting up forms and reinforcing steel. Repair existing concrete surfaces by patching, grinding, or overlaying. Remove rough or defective spots and patch holes to ensure a smooth surface. Assist with installation and adjustment of formwork prior to concrete placement. Work with foremen and layout crews to verify elevations, slopes, and finishing tolerances. Set anchors, embeds, and other hardware into finished concrete as required. Follow all company safety policies and jobsite safety requirements. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and operate equipment safely. Inspect finished surfaces for defects, smoothness, and alignment to ensure compliance with project drawings and specifications. Communicate any issues with mix quality, workability, or timing to the supervisor promptly. Read a tape measure in feet and inches, and perform basic math functions. Minimum Qualifications Work requires alert individuals with good balance and physical strength. Must be able to frequently lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 pounds of material. Must be able to frequently walk, bend, kneel, reach and climb. Knowledge of concrete materials, mix designs, curing methods, and surface treatments. Skilled in operating finishing equipment such as power trowels, floats, and screeds. Familiarity with reading construction drawings, elevation benchmarks, and finish schedules. Ability to work with different types of concrete finishes (e.g., smooth, broom, stamped, exposed aggregate). Strong attention to detail, quality workmanship, and safety. Must be able to speak and understand instructions and directives in English. Preference given to candidates with a minimum of two years of concrete construction work experience as a Cement Mason that meets or exceeds performance expectations. Preference of certification in crane signaling and rigging.
