PCU/Stepdown Nurse (RN) | Greensboro, North Carolina
Job Description Job Description Nursing degree, active registered nurse (RN) license and minimum 1 years RN experience required. A specialized nursing opportunity is available in a new high-acuity progressive care unit (PCU) that will evolve into an intensive care unit (ICU) by the end of 2026. This contract role is located in Greensboro, NC, starting around late September to early October 2026. The position offers exposure to a variety of complex cardiac patient cases within a teaching hospital environment that holds Level 1 Trauma designation. Key Responsibilities: Provide expert care to cardiac and post-surgical patients including those with CHF, STEMI/NSTEMI, cardiomyopathy, and post-cardiac procedures. Manage advanced clinical interventions such as defibrillation, cardioversions, chest tubes, tracheostomies, and various drips including pressors and sedation. Interpret EKGs, monitor and manage devices like Swan-Ganz catheters and Impella pumps. Support wound care and dressing changes for post-operative recovery. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including hospitalists, intensivists, RTs, and telemedicine techs. Adjust to patient ratios initially set at 1:3-4, transitioning to 1:2-3 as the unit converts to ICU. Participate in orientation and ongoing training to develop skills in post-cardiac transplant and LVAD care. Qualifications & Experience: Registered Nurse with BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications. Minimum of 2 years experience in ICU or progressive care; CVICU preferred. Competence in general ICU skills, cardiac patient management, and advanced nursing procedures. Experience with post-op cardiac patients and critical care equipment. Ability to float within scope of practice to related units as needed. Scheduling: Shifts: 6:30 AM 7:00 PM or 6:30 PM 7:00 AM. Weekend rotation every other week or equivalent. Self-scheduling model; holiday coverage expected for 50% of holidays. No on-call requirements.
