Substation Senior Structural Engineer HDR Engineering is looking for a Substation Senior Structural Engineer (Substation Sr. SE) to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals. The Substation Sr. SE has broad technical knowledge and experience with the structural design components of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects up to 500 kV, including steel structure and foundation analysis & design. Leveraging that knowledge and experience, they work in close coordination with Project Managers (PM) and project teams in multiple office locations to lead, oversee, review, and/or execute the structural engineering and design components of substation projects. The Substation Sr. SE may also train, mentor, and guide junior engineers across the practice and help develop and implement best practices to advance our capabilities across this discipline. Specific Duties Include Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute structural engineering tasks for substation structural members such as rolled steel shapes, lattice steel framing, and folded plate tubular steel shapes, including detailed design, calculations, and detailing for fabrication or development of loading and concept drawings for submittal to a steel fabricator. Lead, oversee, review, and/or execute foundation design tasks for substation structures, including drilled piers, spread footings, driven piles, and other types, using industry standard software. Support physical substation layout designs, plans, elevations/sections, details, and associated bills of materials. Prepare and/or review specifications for construction & materials. Assign project tasks and provide technical guidance to project team members. Co‑ordinate and/or perform quality checks and reviews for project deliverables per the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures; perform quality checks and/or reviews of projects from other teams on an as‑needed basis. Collaborate with transmission line civil/structural engineers to cross‑train and share resources. Collaborate with other engineers to develop and maintain standards. Work independently and direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, EITs, or CADD/Designers. Lead multiple projects concurrently, utilizing teams in different locations. Work with senior engineers and technical leaders to identify and develop specific technical expertise; attend training and seminars focused on further development and understanding of complex concepts related to their discipline. Assist with developing technical papers and/or presentations that showcase HDR’s technical capabilities at industry conferences or other events. Participate in project reviews as needed. Some travel may be required. Preferred / Desired Qualifications Master’s degree in Structural Engineering. SE license or ability to obtain; SE license in Hawaii and California is a plus. Technical design experience with physical/outdoor design of high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity up to 500 kV. Familiarity with the latest NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI, ASCE-113 and other industry standards. Experience using industry standard design software, including PLS‑Tower and Mathcad Prime. Previous consulting firm experience. Minimum 10 years of technical design experience with high voltage electrical switchyard and substation projects of varying complexity, including foundation and steel structural design. Working knowledge of the latest AISC-360, ASCE-7, ACI-318, and other industry standards. Experience using industry standard design software, including STAAD, RISA, MFAD, L‑Pile, or equivalent. You will be expected to meet a high standard for analysis and manufacturing discipline, and work with cross-functional teams to pass all specifications and requirements necessary to ship a product. Write requirements, specifications, and test plans for both hardware and firmware. Define factory tests, test limits, and work with factory and peers to perform failure analysis and corrective actions. Guide the team in the development of necessary algorithms, state-transition diagrams/flowcharts and analysis for each regime of operation. Travel up to 20% is required. Minimum Qualifications Solid EE fundamentals in both analog and digital design with focus on Power Electronics. Solid fundamentals in modeling, data collection, data analysis, and statistical analysis tools (e.g., Python, JMP, Matlab). Circuit-level simulation experience in EE simulation platforms like Cadence/ADS/LTspice, etc. B.S. and a minimum of 3 years relevant industry experience. Preferred Qualifications Comfortable with tackling new challenges with critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Team player with strong communication skills and ability to lead multi-discipline teams to make design tradeoffs based on available information in a timely manner. Hands-on experience and proven track record in system definition, integration, architecture, prototyping, and validation. Knowledge and experience in direct wireless charging. Experience in high-volume products from concept to end, and working with contract manufacturers. Experience with firmware definition and debugging. Experience working with cross-functional firmware partners. Direct coding experience and algorithm design experience is a plus. Master’s/PhD in a relevant EE field. Pay & Benefits At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. The base pay range for this role is between $139,500 and $258,100, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Overview As a Senior or Staff Development Scientist, you will be part of the Assay Development team for the product development of DELFI Diagnostics’ Lung Cancer Screening Test medical device. You will lead the development and optimization of robust multiomics molecular diagnostic assays for in vitro diagnostic (IVD) applications. The ideal candidate has a strong scientific foundation in Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) with liquid biopsies for genomic and proteomic analyses, technical leadership experience, and experience working under a Design Control framework to develop and validate regulated diagnostic products. This is a lab-based position with some hybrid flexibility and is onsite 5 days a week when laboratory work requires it. About DELFI Diagnostics DELFI Diagnostics, Inc. is developing next-generation, blood-based tests to detect cancer. The DELFI platform uses fragmentomics and machine-learning methods on whole-genome sequencing data to address high-burden health challenges and serve diverse populations. FirstLook Lung is the company’s lung cancer screening test, designed to be part of routine blood work. This test has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. Responsibilities Design, develop, optimize assay, reagent, and quality control parameters to set tolerance limits and meet performance requirements for complex multiomic assays Develop robust processes for reagent manufacturing, reagent QC, and transfer to contract reagent manufacturers Perform rigorous design of experiments, data analysis, and act as subject matter expert by collaborating with assay biostatisticians, bioinformaticians, engineers, and scientists to determine key assay performance characteristics Document product development requirements and author study protocols and reports to ensure traceability and compliance with industry standards Be accountable for development activities and advance the assay through design control processes to meet product requirements and project milestones by contributing to plans, risk assessment, and verification activities What you’ll accomplish 12 months from now Led the identification of critical-to-quality parameters, optimization, and development of specification limits to control the assay and reagent manufacturing processes Be the subject matter expert for DELFI Diagnostics’ Lung Cancer Screening Test key performance metrics across multiple subsystems and the integration of multiple omics under one medical device Be able to understand regulatory requirements, perform risk assessments, and participate in the elaboration of plans and data-driven decisions to prioritize IVD development What you’ll bring to DELFI Required PhD with 5 years or Master’s with 8 years of industry assay development experience in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a similar discipline Deep understanding of developing NGS cfDNA/multi-omic assay technologies from plasma (e.g., DNA fragments, RNA, small variants, methylation, and immunoassays) Hands-on experience with reagent development and assay optimization in an IVD or LDT product development context within a regulated laboratory environment (GLP) Experience in writing protocols, designing experiments, analyzing results, and documenting outcomes in reports Clear communication skills, ability to work with cross-functional teams, and experience mentoring and training junior scientists and other stakeholders, fostering a collaborative, data-driven culture Ability to work on-site at our Palo Alto laboratory five days a week when required and travel to the Baltimore office periodically Preferred Experience validating or establishing key performance characteristics such as LoB, LoD, LoQ, and linearity for quantitative assays Experience establishing sample intermediates, safe stopping points, reagent shelf life, and in-use reagent stability specifications Data analysis capabilities using R, Python, or JMP Developing or executing assays using automated liquid handlers is preferred Product transfer in a regulated and ISO-compliant environment We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company.
