Safety Officer
The Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC), a publicly-owned wastewater treatment facility located in Newark, New Jersey, is currently seeking a Safety Officer. Created in 1902, PVSC is the 5th largest facility of its kind in the United States, directly serving approximately 1.5 million residents in 48 municipalities located in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Passaic and Union Counties. The 140-acre plant is designed to treat an average of 330 million gallons per day (“mgd”) of wastewater with an annual average flow of approximately 241 mgd. Position Summary: The Safety Officer is responsible for supporting the overall operation and administration of PVSC’s Safety Department. This will include developing comprehensive safety programs, training activities and inspection procedures, as well as participating in periodic test programs for evaluating both safety issues and responses to emergency situations. Education and Experience: High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or equivalency certificate is required, as is advanced training in safety management. Management of various safety programs such as Control of Hazardous Energy Compliance Programs (CHECP), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), safety auditing and fire safety is required. A minimum of six (6) years of diversified experience in a large continuous process, manufacturing company or public utility is necessary. Experience in public speaking, and teaching/training established curriculum preferred. Licenses and/or Certifications: 30 Hour OSHA General Industry certificate required. 30 Hour OSHA Construction certificate preferred. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certifications are required, as is a valid New Jersey driver’s license. Board of Safety Professional Certificates preferred. Requirements: Must have knowledge of safe work practices, concepts, principles, and techniques. Must be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate safety issues, and apply appropriate solutions, during critical incidents. Good organizational skills, along with the ability to develop safe work methods, are required. Physical Demands: Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without a reasonable accommodation to ensure the health and safety of oneself and others are maintained. Perform physical activities that require considerable use of the arms, legs and the whole body, such as climbing (including ladders), lifting up to 50 lbs., balancing, walking, stooping and handling heavy objects. Must qualify for and possess the ability to perform entry into confined spaces while wearing proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as, but not limited to, canister and dust masks, as well as SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus). Working Conditions: Workers are employed in conditions associated with a wastewater treatment plant and sewer collection system and will be required to work indoors and outdoors. The expected base pay range for this position is $46,452 to $118,579. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, education, training, and formal credentials.
