Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS/NOMC) – School-Based

State Retirement Plan! Options for full time or part time. Compassionate and understand culture. NOT a burnout culture. Very transparent, open, and supportive. This Jobot Job is hosted by: Ben Eberly Are you a fit? Easy Apply now by clicking the "Quick Apply" button and sending us your resume. Salary: $75,000 - $95,000 per year A bit about us: What would your workday feel like if you did not have to fight administration for time, resources, or support? This school-based Orientation and Mobility Specialist opportunity offers something increasingly difficult to find: meaningful work without a burnout culture. You will help students ages 3–21 who are blind or visually impaired develop the confidence, safety, and independence to navigate their school, community, and daily lives. You will have the resources, flexibility, and leadership support to do the work the way you were trained—not according to a rigid corporate or Department of Education mold. Full-time and part-time schedules are available. The school will consider someone available as little as two days per week. Why join us? This is not a fee-for-service environment. Your day is not controlled by billing pressure or an endless productivity clock. Most disciplines average approximately 10 sessions per day or 50 per week, but Orientation and Mobility sessions may run 45–60 minutes, so caseload expectations are adjusted accordingly. The culture is supportive, flexible, compassionate, and family-oriented. You are trusted to use your professional judgment and shape how you work. Your voice is heard, your work is respected, and you are not expected to fit into a predetermined mold. Leadership is transparent and gives employees grace when life happens. A first-year mentor is guaranteed, so you will have support while learning the students, systems, and school. Professional-development resources and CEU opportunities are available. The school participates in a state retirement plan and offers a 403(b). Tuition reimbursement is available, with the final annual amount being confirmed. Healthcare benefits are available for eligible employees. One leader on the team previously worked for the DOE five minutes from home and earned more money—but chose this school because, in her words, “peace is priceless.” The difference in support, resources, flexibility, and respect was like night and day. Job Details What you will do Provide direct Orientation and Mobility instruction to students who are blind or visually impaired. Work with students who may also have developmental, physical, cognitive, or multiple disabilities. Deliver individualized instruction in one-on-one and school-based settings. Teach students safe and effective travel techniques that improve independence. Develop, implement, and monitor Orientation and Mobility goals within student IEPs. Complete evaluations, progress reports, and required documentation. Use IEP Direct to document quarterly progress. Collaborate with teachers, therapists, families, and classroom staff. Integrate Orientation and Mobility goals into classroom and community activities. Adapt instruction, materials, and assessments to each student’s age, abilities, and needs. Apply current O&M techniques for students ages 3–21. What you will need Current ACVREP certification as a Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or current National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC). Salary: $75,000 - $95,000 per year A bit about us: Some school-based OT positions ask you to help students while also fighting administration, scheduling, equipment shortages, and a system that treats every request like a congressional hearing. Ask employees why they stay and you will hear the same words repeatedly: peace, flexibility, kindness, autonomy, and support. You are trusted to be a clinician, encouraged to bring your own personality and treatment style, and supported by leadership that genuinely wants you to grow. You do not have to fit into a corporate mold here. Your work speaks for itself. Why join us? Why? Because she was tired of constantly fighting for resources, support, scheduling, and the ability to do her job properly. Her description of the difference was simple: “Peace is priceless.” Job Details WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING Provide individual and small-group occupational therapy to students ages 3–21 based on their IEP goals Help students improve sensory processing, fine motor skills, coordination, mobility, self-care, and everyday independence Complete initial, annual, and triennial evaluations and develop appropriate treatment goals Recommend adaptive equipment, orthotic devices, assistive technology, and compensatory strategies Collaborate with teachers, families, and related-service providers to integrate therapy into the classroom and home SKILLS YOU NEED Active New York State Occupational Therapist license School-based, pediatric, or special-needs occupational therapy experience preferred Interested in hearing more?
