The Estimator will play a critical role in the success of SJ Hamill Construction by leading the estimating process for heavy civil and marine construction projects. This position is responsible for evaluating project requirements, preparing accurate cost estimates, and working closely with project managers, engineers, and vendors to ensure competitive pricing and scope definition. The Estimator will also contribute to strategic business growth through proposal development and bid strategy execution. Primary Responsibilities: Fully manages project estimates from initial “go” determination to contract execution. Formulates and leads project estimates/proposals to ensure quality, accurate, and timely submission. Solicit pricing from vendors and subcontractors to prepare the most accurate, economical, and realistic project cost estimates. Review bid documents and prepare all proposal items required for bid submission including quantity takeoffs and market research. Analyze project specifications, drawings, and contracts to identify cost components and risk factors. Perform detailed quantity take-offs and develop comprehensive cost estimates. Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain pricing and scope clarifications. Develop project schedules, resource schedules, cost breakdowns, and value engineering recommendations. Conduct risk assessments and provide solutions for cost and schedule optimization. Ensure estimates align with current market conditions, labor rates, and material costs. Manage the estimating database, ensuring consistency and accuracy across all project bids. Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and contract negotiations. Assist in the development of project proposals and presentations for prospective clients. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field. Minimum of 7 years of experience in estimating heavy civil and marine construction projects. Proficiency in HCSS HeavyBid and other relevant estimating software. Deep understanding of marine construction techniques, materials, and industry best practices. Strong negotiation and communication skills for subcontractor and vendor coordination. Ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously and meet tight deadlines. Experience working on projects in coastal and marine environments. Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to develop innovative cost-saving strategies. Positive attitude and team building skills to promote company objectives.
