We are seeking an experienced Metal Shop Estimator who can analyze project requirements, calculate precise material and labor costs, and help us win profitable bids. What You'll Do (Responsibilities) As our Metal Shop Estimator, you will be the critical link between incoming RFQs (Requests for Quotes) and our production team. Analyze & Takeoff: Review client blueprints, architectural drawings, 3D models, and specifications to perform accurate material and labor takeoffs. Calculate Costs: Estimate raw material requirements (steel, aluminum, stainless), hardware, outsourcing needs (powder coating, galvanizing, laser cutting), and shop labor hours. Source & Negotiate: Gather current vendor pricing for raw materials and specialty subcontracted services to ensure competitive yet profitable bidding. Prepare Proposals: Draft comprehensive, professional quote proposals for clients, clearly outlining scopes of work, inclusions, exclusions, and lead times. Collaborate: Work closely with project managers, shop foremen, and sales teams to review complex projects and ensure estimated methods align with shop capabilities. Track & Refine: Monitor won/lost bid metrics and compare actual post-production costs against original estimates to continuously improve accuracy. What We're Looking For (Requirements) Experience 5 years of experience estimating within a metal fabrication, machining, structural steel, or relevant manufacturing shop environment. Blueprint Fluency: Exceptional ability to read and interpret industrial blueprints, welding symbols, and structural drawings. Tech Savvy: Proficiency with estimating software, Shop Tech E2 Math & Analytical Skills: Strong mathematical aptitude, spatial reasoning, and a systematic approach to breaking down complex assemblies. Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for navigating client relationship management and vendor negotiations. Background: A background "on the tools" as a fabricator or machinist is a massive plus, though not strictly required.
