Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists are experts in the theory and application of the principles of asepsis and sterile technique to combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation and tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. Maintaining safety awareness as it applies to patient and equipment. Proper handling and identification of all specimens. Collaborating with team members to check and accurately restock necessary supplies in assigned room in a fiscally responsible manner. Preparing the operative site for surgery under the direction of a registered nurse and assists the other members of the surgical team as needed; reports status of procedure to relief team. Demonstrating commitment to personal growth and development. This is to include attending in-services, maintaining certification, keeping up-to-date on meeting minutes and updated policies and procedure. Recognizing the importance of teamwork, consideration, and cooperation within the operating room. Responsible for preparing and maintaining sterile fields to assure quality patient care. This is to include assuring integrity of asepsis according to policies and procedures; maintain alertness and report any break in technique. Assist and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. Verify with Circulating Nurse complete, sponge, needle and instrument counts. Inspection of supplies and equipment for evidence of proper sterilization and integrity according to standards. Identifying the principles of sterile technique and applies these techniques when assisting each operative procedure. Qualifications EDUCATION A graduate of CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program or formal program as defined by the LCCST. (Training may be through a hospital based program or through the military.) EXPERIENCE 1-2 years of experience and certification as a surgical technician preferred. LICENSURE Must obtain LCC-ST certification within 1 year of employment if not already certified. SPECIAL SKILLS Demonstrated knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique combined with the knowledge of human anatomy and various instrumentation and procedures in all surgical areas and services. Demonstrates knowledge of all aspects of the Perioperative Department and works independently on surgical procedures. Utilizes the recommended guidelines as set forth in the Association of Surgical Technologist Standards of Practice in accomplishing job-related responsibilities. Additional Information Heart and Vascular Cardiac ICU (5-1 SP) The Cardiac ICU is a fast paced, high acuity, 14-bed, critical care unit that cares for adult patients with complex cardiac, medical diagnoses such as myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, unstable arrhythmias, and heart failure. Our patients are treated with medical and interventional management. Nursing staff are trained in advanced heart failure management, including short- and long-term mechanical circulatory support (with devices such as intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella catheters, and LVADs) and evaluation for advanced therapies and transplantation. RN-HVC Cardiothoracic ICU (CTICU/WP3) Cardiothoracic ICU is an 18-bed cardiac surgery unit, specializing in care for complex post-operative CABG, valve replacements, aortic dissection repairs, heart transplants and LVAD implantation. This is also the only unit in YNHH health system that cares for patients requiring ECMO, whether it is VV (lung bypass) or VA (heart and lung bypass). In addition, patients may require additional devices including IABP, Impella/VADs, and/or CRRT. Nurses will be trained to devices based on previous experience and progression of skills, expectations and critical thinking. HVC Cardiovascular ICU and Stepdown (5-4 SP) The Cardiovascular ICU and Stepdown is a 14-bed hybrid unit consisting of 8 ICU and 6 stepdown beds. We specialize in caring for patients post complex vascular surgery, such as aortic repairs, and post cardiac surgery patients such as CABG and valve replacements in our ICU beds. In the stepdown beds we care for patients with a variety of complex heart and vascular diagnoses.
