OVERVIEW: The Senior Pilot Plant Engineer uses technical knowledge, judgement, and engineering skills to develop solutions to a variety of technical challenges to support pilot scale development programs and projects. This role performs normally unsupervised engineering work dealing with the daily pilot plant operations, communicating chemical process runs with operators, development of process technology for capital projects, improving pilot plant safety & reliability and/or testing new equipment concepts. Position requires daily presence in the pilot operating units and a strong desire to work hands-on with pilot plant operators. The role interacts with a wide variety of support resources including engineers, R&D scientists, safety, maintenance, and contractors. ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Operations (60%): Coordinates pilot plant schedule with R&D and Process Technology teams and provides support to daily activities in executing pilot programs and campaigns. Creates and maintains operating procedures, manuals, and run sheets. Leads advanced troubleshooting and appropriate root-cause analysis and accountable for implementation of associated corrective actions. Applies statistical methods and Six Sigma tools to analyze campaign data, optimize operations, identify improvement opportunities, and implement solutions to deliver value to customers. Process (20%): Understands pilot plant process technology, equipment, unit operations, and control technology and looks for opportunities to apply new technology to improve existing processes. Communicates technical information and issues to pilot plant leadership and Process Technology teams; identifies and collaborates with external resources when needed. Manages assigned capital projects, budgets and execution. Leads project commissioning and start-up activities for assigned projects. Safety & Environmental (20%): Understands and applies safety and environmental regulations applicable to the assignment. Has a working knowledge of the process safety management standard and is responsible for resolving issues identified in internal and external audits. Leads Management of Change, Pre Startup Safety Reviews, and Incident Investigations and is responsible for implementation of associated action items. Participates as the pilot plant representative for Process Hazard Analyses and is responsible for assigned action items.
