Technician I-Diesel & Heavy Truck/Equipment
Job Description Job Description The Technician I-Diesel & Heavy Truck/Equipment assists with the inspection, maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy-duty trucks (Class 6–8) and crane-equipped vehicles, bucket trucks, diggers, or similar utility equipment. This role works under the guidance of senior technicians and shop leadership to develop technical skills in mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and crane systems while maintaining safety, compliance, and quality standards. Core Responsibilities Diagnostics, Repair & Technical Work Assist with diagnosing, repairing, and replacing mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air systems on heavy-duty trucks Perform routine maintenance and basic repairs on diesel and gas engines, drivetrains, brakes, suspension, and hydraulic systems Learn to use diagnostic tools and software under supervision Assist senior technicians with troubleshooting mechanical and electrical issues Complete assigned repairs and maintenance tasks accurately and efficiently Truck-Mounted Crane Responsibilities Assist with inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, and function-testing truck-mounted cranes and related equipment Support repairs and maintenance on articulated and telescopic cranes, bucket trucks, diggers, aerial platforms, or similar boom equipment Perform assigned crane-related and other mechanical work in compliance with ANSI, OSHA, and DOT requirements Assist with inspections and servicing of boom extensions, outriggers, winches, hoists, and hydraulic systems Maintenance, Compliance & Safety Perform preventative maintenance services and safety inspections under supervision Follow all company safety protocols, shop procedures, and PPE requirements Help identify wear, damage, or potential maintenance concerns Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas in accordance with shop standards Assist with DOT inspections and compliance-related tasks Documentation & Communication Accurately document repairs, inspections, and maintenance performed Communicate repair progress, equipment concerns, and parts needs to supervisors and senior technicians Complete work orders and inspection forms using company systems Installation, Upfitting & Fabrication Assist with equipment upfits and modifications as directed Perform basic welding or fabrication work as skills and certifications allow Assist with hydraulic hose fabrication and installations Learn to read wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and OEM service manuals Work Environment Work safely in shop and occasional field service environments Ability to lift 50–75 lbs and work in varied indoor/outdoor conditions Required Qualifications 1–3 years of diesel truck, or heavy equipment mechanic experience Basic understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air brakes, and electrical systems Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn crane, diesel, and heavy equipment systems Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team Valid driver’s license Basic computer or digital work order system proficiency Ability to follow OEM service procedures and manufacturer specifications Preferred Qualifications Vocational or technical school training in diesel or heavy equipment repair Exposure to truck-mounted cranes, hydraulics, bucket trucks, or related equipment Welding or fabrication experience CDL permit or CDL (Class B or higher) ASE certifications or manufacturer training Experience using diagnostic software and tools Other Duties This job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities required for this position.
